What happens on a biohazard job
- Assessment and containment. The affected area is isolated so contamination doesn't spread through the house during the work.
- Removal. Anything porous that absorbed biological material — carpet, pad, subfloor sections, drywall, mattresses, upholstered furniture — is removed and bagged as regulated medical waste.
- Cleaning and disinfection of remaining surfaces with hospital-grade disinfectants, then deodorization.
- Verification. ATP surface testing confirms the area is clean before the crew calls it done.
- Documentation for the insurance claim: photos, a materials list, and disposal manifests.
For the family: you do not have to go back into the room. Give the crew access, tell them what to save (they will look for documents, jewelry, photos and anything you name), and let them handle the rest. That is what they are for.
Insurance
Most homeowners policies treat an unattended death or trauma as sudden, accidental property damage and cover the remediation, minus your deductible. Sewage backup usually needs a water/sewer backup endorsement. The crew works directly with adjusters and can bill the carrier where the policy allows. Renters' policies are less consistent. Lake County specifics
The Lake County Coroner's office releases the scene; nothing on the cleanup side starts before that. Questions people ask
Who is responsible for cleaning up after an unattended death?
The property owner or the family — not the police, coroner or funeral home. Their involvement ends when the person is removed. The remediation of the scene is a separate, private job, and it is what the partner crew does.
Does homeowners insurance cover biohazard cleanup?
Often, yes. An unattended death, a trauma, or a sewage backup is a sudden event, and most policies treat the cleanup as covered property damage (sewage may require a specific endorsement). The crew documents the scene for the claim. See the insurance guide.
Why can't a regular cleaning company or family do this?
Because biological material soaks into subfloors, drywall and mattresses, and because there are real bloodborne-pathogen and disposal rules. A certified crew removes affected materials, treats the structure, and disposes of waste through licensed channels. Cleaning the visible surface is not remediation.
How fast can a crew be there?
Same day is usually possible for a trauma or unattended-death scene. Call the number any hour; tell the assistant it is a biohazard job and your town, and it is prioritized.
Will there be any sign of what happened afterwards?
The goal of remediation is that no one could tell. Affected porous materials are removed and replaced, the area is disinfected and deodorized, and the crew does not leave until air and surface tests are clear.
Is this discreet?
Yes. Unmarked vehicles, plain clothes, no signage, and no discussion with neighbors. Discretion is the reason families call a local number instead of a franchise with a wrapped truck.
